Dr. Vaina presently serves at Boston University as a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and a Research Professor of Neurology in the School of Medicine. Dr. Vaina is also associated with the Neurology Department at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard Medical School-Department of Neurology. She is on the faculty of the Athinoula A. Martino’s Center for Biomedical Imaging at Harvard University and a Research Affiliate in the Center for Biological and Computational Learning at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Brain and Cognitive Science. She is Director of the Brain and Vision Research Laboratory at Boston University and co-director of the Neurology of Vision Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Vaina’s research is in core problems in cognitive neuroscience and neurology. She is using various methods including experimentation/psychophysics, computational modeling, neuropsychological & behavioral neurology approaches with brain-damaged patients, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and magneto encephalography (MEG). Dr. Vaina has published 144 peer-reviewed research articles and has authored/edited five books on cognitive and visual science. She served as a charter member of the National Institute of Health (NIH) Perception and Cognition Study Section, and on the National Science Foundation, Brain Initiative Review Panel. She is the chief editor of the American Journal of Case Reports and the Section Editor on Neuroscience & Neurology of the Medical Science Monitor. In 2000 Dr. Vaina was nominated the Millennium Professor at the University of Bologna, and between 2003 and 2006 she held the prestigious Rientro dei Cervelli Award at the same University. She has been elected a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (2004) and she received a doctorate Honoris Causa in Medicine-Neurology, from the Vasile Goldis University, Romania. Dr. Vaina holds a Ph. D. in Mathematical Logic from Sorbonne, France, and a M.D./Ph.D. from the University of Toulouse, France. She completed postdoctoral training in cognitive neuroscience and artificial Intelligence at the UC Berkeley, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard Medical School. Dr. George Perry is currently the dean of the College of Sciences and professor of biology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. After graduation in Zoology from University of California, Santa Barbara, he headed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography and also studied at Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University and the Marine Biological Laboratory of Woods Hole and obtained his PhD in Marine Biology in 1979. Dr. Perry joined the faculty of Case Western Reserve University in 1995, where he currently holds an adjunct appointment. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, Microscopy Society of America, Royal Society of Medicine, Royal Society of Chemistry, Society of Biology and the Linnean Society and past-president of the American Association of Neuropathologists. He has been elected member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, Mexican Academy of Sciences and Academy of Sciences Lisbon; Iberoamerican Molecular Biology Organization, Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and won the Distinguished Professional Mentor Award from the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science, Senior Investigator Award from the International College of Geriatric psychoneuropharmacology, Senior Fulbright Fellow and the National Honor Plaque of Panama for exceptional contributions to Neuroscience. Dr. Perry is on Board of the National Organization of Portuguese Americans and serves as Director of Education and Research.

Neuropathology

Rodney O. Leacock, M.D., neurointensivist at Palmetto Health Neurosurgery Associates, is board certified in neurology, neurocritical care and vascular neurology. Leacock received his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. and completed his neurology residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went on to complete a fellowship in neurocritical care at Wayne State University, Detroit Receiving Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and a stroke fellowship at Saint Louis University in Saint Louis, Missouri. His clinical interests include acute ischemic stroke, intracranial and subarachnoid hemorrhage, status epilepticus, and airway protection in patients with neurological disorders. He specializes in caring for patients with complex neurological diseases.

After completing his medical education in Russia Dr.Kalika enrolled in Chiropractic school in Chicago. In 1997-1998 – Dr. Kalika received a fellowship in Manual Medicine in Motol Hospital in Prague, the Czech Republic under world-renowned Prof. Karel Lewit MD. Later on, Dr. Kalika studied at Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic with another world-famous neurologist Vladimir Janda MD, hailed as the world’s leader in ‘rational therapy’ in musculoskeletal medicine and rehabilitation. Thereafter he met Prof. Pavel Kolar, the European sports celebrity doctor, and developer of DNS (Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization) treatment method of musculoskeletal disorders. Observing Kolar’s treatment techniques and procedures and seeing how instantaneous the results were, Lev had little doubt what his next step would be. Through the years of studying in Prague and learning Czech language, Dr. Kalika was certified in both Vojta therapy and DNS according to Kolar approach. Dr. Kalika is very proud to be the first practitioner on the East Coast to have the privilege of introducing DNS methodology that changed the way back pain and other locomotor dysfunctions are regarded and treated. Being an active member of many scientific societies and taking over hundred different courses in the field of locomotor disorders, back pain, sports medicine, and rehabilitation, Dr. Kalika developed a strong interest in technological advances in the field of back pain and sports injury rehabilitation as well as diagnostic ultrasound application. Neurology

Harish C. Pant received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Agra University, Agra, India. His postdoctoral studies were conducted on the mechanisms of electron and ion transport in model membrane systems at the Department of Biophysics at Michigan State University. He joined the Laboratory of Neurobiology in the NIMH as a senior staff fellow in 1974 with Ichiji Tasaki where he studied the function of the axonal cytoskeleton in the squid giant axon. In 1979 he moved to the NIAAA extending his studies on the neuronal cytoskeleton and the effects of alcohol on its regulation. He moved to the NINDS, Laboratory of Neurochemistry in 1987 where he is presently chief of the section on Cytoskeleton Regulation. His laboratory is studying the mechanisms of topographic regulation of neuronal cytoskeleton proteins by post-translational modification, including the role of kinase cascades in normal brain and during neurodegeneration.

Neurology

Mr Rafid Al-Mahfoudh is an appointed Consultant Neurosurgeon and Complex Spine Surgeon at the Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre and Royal Sussex County Hospital since 2015. He is senior lecturer at the University of Brighton and previously lecturer at the University of Liverpool. He is one very few surgeons with dual Orthopedic and Neurosurgical spine accreditation in addition to further specialist fellowship training in anterior skull base and minimally invasive neurosurgery in Adelaide and New York. He was the highest-ranking candidate in the PLAB exam for medical graduates. His training includes basic surgical training in Mersey Deanery followed by specialist Neurosurgery training in the Walton centre. The Walton Centre is the only hospital trust in the UK specializing solely in neurology, neurosurgery and pain services. This was followed by highly competitive subspecialist fellowships in orthopedic spinal surgery in Brisbane and further sub specialist training in anterior skull base, pituitary and minimally invasive neurosurgery in Adelaide and New York (Weill Cornell Medical College). He has extensive experience in treating the full spectrum of spinal disorders, pituitary tumors and endoscopic neurosurgical techniques. He has specialist interest in degenerative spine disorders, spine tumors, trigeminal neuralgia, hydrocephalus and brain tumors. Mr Al-Mahfoudh has in-depth medico legal experience starting early in his career. He has been Medico legal expert with an independent Medical Assessments Agency; Red Health) in Brisbane, Australia since November/2013, this included assessing and calculating the resulting disability according to the AMA guidelines. His interest in this area motivated him to complete the AMA Guides 5th Edition Training Course in Brisbane in June/2014. He has successfully completed a variety of both personal injury and medical negligence claims relating to spinal disorders in addition to neurosurgical claims. These claims have ranged from calculation of whole person impairment as a result of a claim, causation, medical negligence and expert opinion on potential claims.

Neuroscience

I study the functioning of mitochondria and its regulation in mammalian tissues. The main focus is on the production and scavenging of reactive oxygen species, the antioxidant defense system of mitochondria, mitochondrial calcium handling, and energy metabolism in the context of neurodegenerative diseases, specifically Alzheimer’s. In the future, we would like to establish a new research program aimed to develop and test the methods of post-births reversible modification of mitochondria in various tissues to desirable properties (e.g., correction of inborn defects, increased tolerance to hypoxia, or other metabolic enhancements) by pharmacological and genetic approaches with non-viral delivery vectors of the genetic material.

Dr. Foundas is a Cognitive and Behavioral Neurologist currently working as the Executive Director of the Brain Institute of Louisiana. She has worked as a Professor of Neurology at Tulane University, Vice-Chair of Clinical Research at LSU, and Chair of Neurology at UMKC.
